WCWFC 1-4 Peterborough United

WCWFC Starting Line Up

WCWFC kicked off their National League campaign with an opening day defeat to Peterborough United at Sixways.

Peterborough, who finished in third last season, started on the front foot against newly promoted Worcester City Women with two quick fire goals inside the opening ten minutes from forward Kirk who was looking sharp in and around the City box.

After the opening goals, the game settled down a bit but with Peterborough mostly dominating possession. City had three players making their competitive debuts and new signing Bate was put to test on multiple occasions at left-back by Posh winger Middleton but on numerous occasions stood up to the challenge and held her own. The new City defender also did well to prevent an inevitable goal with a brilliant header off the line.

Peterborough made it three just before the half hour mark after a delightful chip from captain Perkins which took them into the half time break with a comfortable 0-3 lead.

City came out positively for the second half, debutant Bellamy was able to have a couple of runs at the Peterborough defence. Ritson came close for City after firing an effort over the bar from Fassnidge's low cross.

Despite Worcester City Women's bright spells, it was Peterborough who scored the next goal of the game after substitute Bennett stabbed it home from a few yards out following a corner.

20 minutes into the second half saw a couple of City changes with Crew coming on for Ritson to make her competitive debut as well as Ballard replacing Highway.

Shortly after, City finally managed a breakthrough to get their first goal of the campaign after captain Fassnidge got in behind the Posh defence and drove into the box to calmly slot it past the onrushing Corry to make it 1-4.

With ten minutes to go, City brought on another debutant with Flitney replacing Congrave. Robinson at right back also impressed on her debut, picking up the WCWFC Supporters Trust POTM award.

City travel to Northampton Town next for their first away game of the season.
