Adobe FA Cup, First Round Proper | Stamford AFC 2 - 3 Worcester City Women

WCWFC Starting 11

Worcester City Women are though to the Second Round Proper of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup after a thrilling game in Lincolnshire on Sunday afternoon.

City got off to a good start in the first ten minutes, putting pressure on Stamford’s defence but Stamford were quick to reply with a shot on target. An early test for Alisha Hine, but City’s keeper comfortably saved it from going over the line. Stamford continued with their press, initially putting a shot across goal for Hine to clip it with her foot, and then a fantastic cover from Beth Marriott kept it from the goal line.

In the 18th minute, the Daniels opened the score line following a corner. City looked to get one back, and a superb strike from Olivia Mitcham soared just over the crossbar but was enough to keep the momentum going in the first half.

Annie Sime took a free kick in a good spot, and after looking like it would dip behind the goalkeeper, the Daniels’ number one tipped the strike over the bar. In the 32nd minute, defender Eva Flitney made a crucial block, getting a touch to put the Daniels’ shot past the post. City continued to press down the other end but couldn’t break through Stamford’s dense defence.

In the 37th minute, City got their sought-after equaliser. A through ball from Jess Fassnidge was picked up nicely by City striker Olivia Mitcham, who struck the ball sweetly into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, the equaliser was short-lived, with Stamford getting their second in the 44th minute, going into the break in the lead.

City started the half making three substitutions, with game-changers Annie Highway, Millie Robinson and Keeley Crew all making an immediate impact on the pitch. In the 57th minute, Highway got her first goal after some solid build-up, with Stamford unable to get the ball off the number 14.

The game began to level out again, with neither team able to break through the final third. With time running out and the score line still being neck and neck, it became tense on the pitch, with both teams trying to get their third before going to penalties.

City walked away with the win after Highway bagged herself a brace in the 87th minute, ensuring City progressed into the Second Round Proper of the FA Cup.

Next week, we are back at Sixways against Barnsley in an important game in the league. Please come and join us on Remembrance Sunday as we look to continue building momentum in the league.
