CITY ARE CHAMPIONS!

WCWFC 3 - 0 Shifnal Town Ladies

City sealed the league title after an impressive win at Sixways in the last home game of the season.

City made a lightning start after just a minute, from the off they got on the attack which caused a bit of pinball in the Shifnal box. Fassnidge and Mitcham both had efforts blocked but eventually, the loose ball fell to Fassnidge who slotted the ball in the bottom left corner to give Worcester the quick lead.

After the first ten minutes, Shifnal settled down into the game and looked to try and create chances of their own. Their first real opportunity fell to their number seven after she nodded the ball past Dolloway to get one-on-one in the box with Stolt. The Shifnal striker tried to dink it over the onrushing Stolt but the City keeper made themselves big to make a huge save.

After that, there wasn’t too much to report back on, City mostly dominated possession with Shifnal trying to hit the Worcester defence on the counterattack. One of those attacks led to a Shifnal free kick on the edge of the box which Stolt saved comfortably.

Moments later Fassnidge had a go from distance after good City possession which sailed just over the bar. From the Shifnal goal kick, they managed to get up the pitch and into the City box. The Shifnal winger cut inside from the left, getting past Baldwin, but her close-range effort was firmly blocked by Stolt preventing an inevitable Shifnal equaliser.

Just before halftime, Worcester so nearly doubled their lead after Ritson’s corner was met by Dolloway but the City defender’s header was blocked on the line by a Shifnal defender. Not long after the halftime whistle blew with City leading 1-0.

City started the second half with intent like they did the first, after just two minutes a floating effort from inside the right-hand side of the box found the top corner from Sophie Griffiths to give Worcester a bit of breathing room.

Worcester soon got their third after great work from Mitcham to drive towards the box, she had the composure to look up and play the ball across to Fassnidge who controlled it, created some space from the defender with some neat footwork and calmly placed it into the bottom left corner.

The Shifnal keeper produced a great save after Davies put through Mitcham with a defence-splitting through ball, Mitcham went for a little dink over the keeper but she got a strong hand to it to keep it out.

It then got to the point of the game where every City fan would have been checking their watches for that final whistle and when it blew the celebrations began as Worcester City Women were officially the league champions which earned promotion into the National League (Tier 4).
