Peterborough United 3-0 WCWFC - FAWNL League Cup

WCWFC Starting 11

Worcester City exited the League Cup in the First Round after a tough match against Peterborough United.

City got off to a good start, in the opening ten minutes, making several good crosses into the box and dominating possession. Despite City’s good progression, in the fifth minute, Peterborough got their first following a corner with their number three heading the ball into the back of the net.

Despite conceding, City kept up the pressure with Chloe Bellamy and Holly Rogers both creating chances. Jess Fassnidge made a great run into the box, but defenders cleared the ball before she could get her shot away. Midfielder Kerstin Ballard forced a fingertip save from Borough’s keeper to keep her shot out of the top left corner, hitting the crossbar.

In the 17th minute, Posh got their second off the back of their counter-attack, with their number 19 slotting it into the goal. Fassnidge had a solid effort ruled offside as the ball was headed past the keeper. It wasn't long, though, before Peterborough got their third and final goal in the final minute of the first half, scoring straight from a free kick.

In the second half, Peterborough dominated possession on the whole, but City did well to keep them from scoring their fourth after a few attempts on target.

City came close to dragging one back for the away side, with Ritson advancing on the attack, dragging her shot across the goal and wide of the post. With ten minutes to go and Peterborough seeking their fourth, Lindsey Jones rushed to get on the goal line to make a clearance, putting a stop to Posh from scoring another.

Our focus switches to Boldmere at home in the league next week. Next Sunday’s match will be a ‘Pink Match’ in partnership with Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven, please join us in getting your tickets below!
