Sutton Coldfield 3-3 Worcester City Women

WCWFC Starting 11

Worcester City Women came away with a point after a well-fought and tough battle on the pitch in Birmingham against Sutton Coldfield Town.

City didn’t get off to a great start, with Sutton Coldfield taking the lead within the first few minutes. Coldfield’s Eva Cassidy got the ball into the back of the net following a free kick to give her side the early lead.

Coldfield had a few narrow chances as the half progressed, and City keeper Alisha Hine made a fantastic save to keep the Royals’ header out. However, it wasn’t long before the next passage of play saw Sutton’s Chloe Finn superb strike from the edge of the box and into the bottom right corner.

City started to get into their stride and created chances in the final 15 minutes of the first half and they came close to narrowing the scoreline with efforts from Jess Fassnidge and Olivia Mitcham.

City came out of the blocks in the second half positively, with Sophie Griffiths coming on for Holly Rogers. Sutton sought to extend their lead further early on after a few missed chances, but City was also building well to claw one back. Griffiths made a break chasing the ball down in the final third but was defended well by the defender.

In the 64th minute, City got one back after a great press on the goalkeeper from Leah Ritson, who blocked the clearance and the ball slid into the back of the net.

Four minutes later, Sutton got their third from a close-range header. Things were picking up quickly, and in the 70th minute, City got their second after Annie Sime whipped it into the area from the edge of the box, which met Mitcham, who decidedly headered it into the back of the net.

Sutton looked to retaliate, but Hine pulled off an incredible save to knock Sutton’s shot past the left post with her foot, keeping City in the game. Five minutes after she scored her first, Mitcham grabbed herself a brace and City the equaliser. Following Millie Robinson’s throw-in, Mitcham made a lovely turn with the ball to drill a shot past the ‘Keeper and into the bottom right corner.

The game ended 3-3 and a point on the road for City who travel away to Tier 5 side Stamford AFC in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup First Round Proper next Sunday 3rd November.

Thank you to all the travelling fans today for your support at Sutton Coldfield! if you can’t make the trip to Stamford, we look forward to seeing you all at Sixways in an important game back in the league against Barnsley on 10th November.
