WCWFC 0 - 1 Northampton Town Women
In the final game of 2024, City fell to a narrow and hard fought one goal defeat against the league leaders Northampton.
The first half started quietly and despite Worcester retaining some nice possession, neither team had any real chances until Hine saved Northampton’s first effort on target in the 17th minute. As the half progressed, Bellamy looked lively up the left side doing well to win the ball back for City. Worcester’s first effort came in the 30th minute when Mitcham fired goalwards a long distance effort which the Northampton keeper did well to save. The first 45 minutes however remained goalless with Hine only having a few minor saves to make.
City started the second half strong with Sime’s powerful effort from distance being put out for a corner by the Northampton keeper. Bellamy then fired over the bar from Highway’s resulting corner. As the second half continued, neither side managed to create many serious chances with Northampton’s shot fired just wide of the post in the 60th minute being their best chance of the half so far. As we moved into the 62nd minute, City made two changes within 3 minutes as Bate and Bellamy made way for Robinson and Crew. In the 64th minute, Congrave put through a wonderful ball to Bellamy who found herself through on goal before being judged offside by the linesman.
The game remained relatively quiet until the 74th minute however, when Northampton put themselves ahead with a looping effort just inside the box. Despite Northampton claiming the lead, City still managed to create chances with the best one coming in the 81st minute. Mitcham managed to play in Fassnidge who did very well to race past her player and was unlucky to slide her effort just past the post. Marriott came on for Congrave in the 81st minute and despite all of City’s game changers bringing a good energy to the game, City could just not quite find a way past the league leader’s resolute defence as the game finished in a narrow defeat for City.
Wishing all our fans and supporters a very merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in 2025!
