Peterborough United 1 – 0 WCWFC
Despite a valiant effort from Worcester City, the team left Peterborough with a 1-0 defeat after Megan Lawlor's goal at the death.
Two minutes into the first half, Worcester hit the woodwork with a fantastic strike from Annie Highway, almost opening up the scoreline for City. The ball didn’t take long to get to the other end though with Peterborough’s shot cleared by Worcester’s solid defence. Following that, Peterborough’s Poppie Brown hit the left post with her rebound effort.
Alisha Hine came in clutch with her first save of the game to knock out Peterborough’s chance at the left post. With City laying tight and low in a defensive block, Posh found it hard to penetrate in their final third.
Despite efforts mid-way through the first half, with Hine once again keeping Peterborough at bay with a comfortable save and Posh striking the crossbar on the stroke of half-time, both teams went into the changing rooms goalless.
Coming out of the blocks post half time, City executed their game plan effectively, sitting tight and deep when Posh looked to advance goalward.
In the 67th minute, Hine pulled through with another huge save, punching away Poppie Brown's effort following a free-kick.
With the game heating up with both teams trying to change the scoreline in their favour, City came close in the 76th minute, trying to turn in the box but the effort was comfortably saved by Posh's number 13, Nieve Corry.
In the dying minutes of the game, Peterborough got their goal through Megan Lawlor after a free-kick rattled under the crossbar to go across the goal line.
