WCWFC 1-2 Notts County

WCWFC 1-2 Notts County

After a dominant first-half performance, City fell to a frustrating loss at Sixways, narrowly losing 2-1 to the Magpies.

The first ten minutes saw City get off to a good start, quickly creating many chances in front of goal. Leah Ritson looked threatening, combining nicely with Olivia Mitcham in the final third. As the half progressed, City dominated possession and just missed the last connection in the final third. In the midfield, Annie Sime worked to continuously pick up the ball, controlling play from the centre. The first half ended 0-0 despite City’s progressive display.

With the second half underway, Notts County came out strong, with their number seven coming close within the first minute, launching a strike from the 18-yard box to hit the crossbar. City’s keeper, Sofia Stolt, remained confident, keeping City in the game.

Things turned around with Mitcham getting away through the Magpies’ defence, but she was unlucky not to hit the back of the net in the 65th minute. However, against the run of play, it was Notts County who opened up the score line in their favour. Annie Highway did her best to try and even out the scoreline, but frustratingly, to no avail. Forcing County’s keeper to full stretch to keep her shot out with 20 minutes to go.

In the 76th minute, the Magpies got their second after a scramble in the box, coming off one of their players to fly into the goal.

After coming on as a substitute, with less than ten minutes to go, Keeley Crew drew one back for City, getting her first for the club. In the dying minutes of the game, finding momentum from Crew’s goal, City sought after the equaliser, but Notts County’s defence remained solid to deny City their second.

We have a big double game next week, playing Solihull Moors on Wednesday and Peterborough United away on Sunday in the first round of the FA WNL League Cup. After that, our next home fixture will be against Boldmere St. Michaels on the 6th of October. Please come and show your support and get your tickets now!
