Match Report | WCWFC 2-3 Sutton Coldfield Town Women

Starting 11

City let slip a two-goal lead as the Royals fightback at Sixways Stadium.

Worcester City Women hoped to bounce back after their disappointing defeat in the semi-final of the County Cup against Kidderminster Harriers as they welcomed Sutton Coldfield Town to Sixways Stadium.

The game started out exactly the same as the week prior with Annie Highway scoring after four minutes with another outrageous finish from distance, only this time it was from open play.

Ten minutes later, Highway again had an effort from distance, but her shot was saved comfortably by the visitor’s goalkeeper.

In the opening twenty minutes, Worcester City Women had the better of the play, although the Royals were looking to exploit the space in behind.

Just before the half-hour mark City added their second of the contest after the ball bounced, Keeley Crew latched onto it and hit one from distance and the ball flew into the net.

Shortly after the 30th minute, after some excellent work from Olivia Mitcham down the left-hand side, she drove into the box, but skipper Jess Fassnidge couldn’t connect to the ball.

Moments later, the Royals pulled one back after a long-range shot was tipped onto the bar by Kirsty Bridgwater, but the effort only fell to Millie Kirk who tapped into an empty net.

In the 37th minute, Evie Billingsley had an effort inside the box, but her effort flashed just wide of the post.

Into the second half and it was the visitors who had the first attempt, but the effort was parried away by Bridgwater.

As the half progressed, City had a great chance as Esme Harris played in Mitcham who rounded the goalkeeper, but went too far wide, she then played the ball back to Harris, whose effort didn’t trouble the Royals’ keeper.

Ten minutes later, the visitors threatened to take the lead after a shot was saved by Bridgwater’s fingertips.

Just before the 80th-minute mark, Keeley Crew had an effort that went over the bar as City were looking to go back into the lead.

In the 83rd minute Evie Billingsley, after some fantastic work down the left-hand side, played a ball across the box but somehow a City player couldn’t get a touch on it.

Three minutes before the final whistle, Keeley Crew stung the palms of the Royals keeper. Unfortunately for City, less than two minutes later the visitors scored to put them in the lead after a finish from Da’Casto.

Next up for Worcester City Women is a trip to sixth place Barnsley Women in the penultimate game of the National League season. We hope to see you all again in April for our FINAL game of the season against Lincoln City on the 27th of April. Get your tickets below!
